Westbeach In & Out wraps up with some jibbery pokery at Snozone Milton Keynes

Just four weeks since the all new Westbeach In & Out competition took the Snowflex kicker at Bearsden by storm, Friday night saw riders from all over the country descend on Milton Keynes to showcase their rail trickery in the second and final leg of the competition.
With the reins of the set up at Milton Keynes being handed over to Westbeach’s very own Andy Nudds, it was sure to be a fun but challenging course; with a down-flat-down gas pipe, butter box to down bar and close out down bars taking centre stage, it wasn’t long until riders started to dip into their impressive bag of tricks.

With the Skullcandy DJ providing the soundtrack and Sean Miller on the mic, the practice session was under way with riders being judged on their style, technicality and consistency. It was all to play for as just the top eight from each age category could claim their place in the first of two finals.

With some of the best UK skiers and snowboarders in attendance it wasn’t an easy decision for the judges, but with a number of stand out performances by Ollie Dutton, Andy Nudds, Reece Gould, Orla Doolin and Will Gilmore for the snowboarders and Chris Wadsworth, Monty Wright, Rowan Cheshire and Molly Summerhayes for the skiers it was time to kick off the 45 minute jam session final.
With the riders now used to the set up, it was during this final where hammers were being thrown. Possibly the smoothest switch front blunt 270s known to man by Ollie Dutton and seriously impressive riding by Will Gilmore made the competition’s standard really stand out - especially nine year old Will.  A big shout out must also go to Len Church who is still slaying the rails of Milton Keynes at 64 years old!  Skier, Chris Wadsworth managed to take best trick in this session with a 270 on 270 off over the butter box to down bar making the competitions standard really stand out.

But with only three riders making the cut to battle it out in a two run super final, it was Andy Nudds, Ollie Dutton and Connor Gould who made it through in the Men’s category, Reece Gould, Will Gilmore and Tomski Robinson for the 16 & under boys, Bradie Collins, Cerys Allen and Becky Menday for the 16 & under Girls and Orla Doolin, Alise Balode and Ashley Marie Sinclair for the women stepping in for the snowboarders.  The skiers saw Josh Birch, Tom Coe and Chris Wadsworth make it through in the Men’s category, Mike Rowlands, Monty Wright and Lewis Doherty for the 16 & under boys, Lexi Rowlands, Madi Rowlands and Molly Summerhayes for the 16 & under girls and Anna Vincenti, Zoe Lewis and Rowan Cheshire for the women.  It was sure to go off with a rider list that read like this.

With a combined score over two runs there wasn’t any time for a safety run, so both runs had to count.  The level of rail riding seen at Milton Keynes last Friday wouldn’t have looked out of place on the international circuit and shows that UK rail riding is definitely up there with some of the best.

In addition to the finalists fighting for their podium spot, the overall winner of Westbeach In and Out was the rider who entered both In and Out legs and ranked the highest.  After taking 1st place in the 16 & under boys at Bearsden and riding solid all night long in Milton Keynes, it was Sam McGrath who took home £500 and a weeks holiday at Treeline Chalets in Morzine for the snowboarders.  But the rider that truly cleaned up was skier, Chris Wadsworth who took 1st place in Milton Keynes, winning a huge stash of prizes in addition to his Contour Roam camera for best trick worth £200, and the overall prize of £500 and another weeks holiday at Treeline Chalets!

Thanks to everyone that came to ride, watch and help out, see you in 2013!

Westbeach In & Out shook Bearsden for the big air part of the series

Westbeach In & Out shook Bearsden for the big air part of the series

The concept of the Westbeach In & Out isn’t rocket science. Two competitions; big air on the Snowflex kicker at Bearsden Ski Club and slopestyle at Milton Keynes Snozone.

Last weekend it all kicked off when the all new Westbeach In and Out competition arrived in Bearsden - arguably the best dryslope in the UK.  With this in mind, it soon became clear it was going to be a good day. The skiing was off the hook, the Skullcandy DJ was on top form, and even the sun came out - yes, in Scotland!

The competition is all about having fun and pushing the standard of UK skiing, and when enough riders to form their own small army turn up, you know it’s going to go down!  It didn’t take much practice for the riders to find their feet, get used to the speed and start stomping tricks left right and centre.

The competition was in full flow; a 45 minutes jam session, as many runs as you can fit in, with the top eight from each group going through to the first of two finals.

This is where the bar was really set. In skiing Murray Buchan who wasn’t seen falling all day was a clear stand out, closely followed by Chris Wadsworth who was landing 9s both normal and switch from the word go.  In the 16 and under boys, it was a closely matched battle between Harris Booth, Fraser McIsaac and Ronan McClaren who made landing 5s, switch 7s and cork 9s look easy.  For the snowboarders, Danny McCormick threw down his trademark cab underflip, closely followed by Marc McClement and his massive back 10 and double back rodeo attempt. Yes, a double back rodeo on Snowflex, with Jesse Smith throwing down his double frontflip for good measures. It went off!

In the biggest age category of the day, the 16 and under boys snowboarders, it was another closely matched showdown between Jake Binnee, Owen Godbold, Cameron Smith and Sam McGrath who all threw down effortlessly all day long.  These guys are the future of British snowboarding and judging by their standard of riding, it looks bright.

Also on the ones to watch list for the skiers were the 16 and under girls.  Well on the way to following in her sister’s Youth Olympic glory, Molly Summerhayes was on fire. As were Kirsty Muir and Ramone Waters.  It was a different story in the U16s women’s snowboarding though, unfortunately for APO UK rider Valia Chapman she took a slam and ended up heading straight to A&E for a quick dose of laughing gas and have the staple remove from her hand leaving Bradie Collins and Cerys Allen to represent the girls.

With the jam session coming to an end it was down to the judges to pick the top three riders from each age category to battle it out in the two run, no safety trick Super Final.

In the 16 and under girls ski it was Ramone Waters who took third place with a switch straight air over the small kicker, leaving Kirsty Muir and Molly Summerhayes to fight it out for 1st and 2nd.  First up for the 16 and under snowboarder girls were Cerys Allen and Bradie Collins who had both been riding solidly all day, landing their frontside 180s, but it was Valia Chapman, possibly still under the influence of laughing gas, who took 1st place with a faultless frontside three.

It was then time for the 16 and under boys to fight for their podium spot. In what was to be the closest matched age category of the day it wasn’t going to be easy for the judges to separate them. First to drop for the skiers was Ronan McClaren with a switch 180 and a 720 followed by Fraser McIsaac and his cork 9, leaving Harris Booth to take first place with a switch 7. Next up, for snowboarding was Cameron Smith, followed by Jake Binnee and then Sam McGrath. But it was Sam who cleaned up taking first, with Jake and Cameron taking 2nd and 3rd.  Definitely ones to watch for the future.

Bringing the first leg of the inaugural Westbeach In & Out competition to a dramatic end were the mens skiers. Kicking off the final was Tom Coe with a huge switch 7 japan in his first run and just slipping out on a switch 9 in his second run, to take third place.  Up next was Chris Wadsworth who took second with a clean 9 blunt, and after riding flawlessly all day Murray Buchan took first and a whole stack of prizes for a switch 9 and and switch 7 truckdriver.  Finally the mens snowboarders took over, going as big as physically possible on the Bearsden kicker was Stuart Gairns, Marc McClement and Danny McCormick. With Stewart just skidding out on a smooth as you like back 7, Marc McClement throwing another a huge backside 7 Japan but riding away solidly from his back 9 to take first place was Danny McCormick.

We think everyone who was came can agree that in terms of the level of riding and the overall atmosphere, this was possibly one of the best Westbeach competitions to date! A big thank you to all the sponsors, all the riders and everyone else who came along!
